Background to the Project

Further to a National Union of Students Diagnostic recommendation, Marjon Student Union’s Turn Around Board has commissioned a student consultation process to feed into their strategic plan. The purpose of this pilot study and the follow up larger quantitative study is to consult the Marjon student body on their views and aspirations for the student union’s mission, vision and infrastructure. This pilot interview study will inform the themes that will be included in the larger quantitative study.

 

What we are looking for

We are seeking highly motivated energetic individuals who have a knack for engaging students in conversation, to interview Marjon Students, in this initial pilot study phase. PhD students or Postgraduate students who are looking to add some research experience to their CVs are encouraged to apply. Outstanding final year UG students will be also considered in exceptional circumstances.  The ideal candidate should have conducted interviews in some capacity and have experience in conducting qualitative research.  A basic knowledge in empirical research, qualitative research processes, ethics procedures and research terminology is essential. Experience in conducting qualitative interviews and a knowledge of confounding issues and the role of various interview biases is desirable.

 

Who you will be working for

The research team and the interview process will be supervised by Dr. Sanjee Perera-Child, Chair of Marjon Student Union and Mick Davies

Dr. Sanjee Perera-Child is a Cognitive Psychologist and an experienced research consultant, who is also the Chair of the Marjon Student Union Turn Around Board. She is the lead investigator in this project and will train all Research Assistants and supervise the interviews.

Mick Davies is the General Manager and senior permanent staff member of the student union.

At the end of this consultation process we will supply a reference confirming your interviewer participation and training. If the study is published all RAs who contributed to the process will be named in the acknowledgement section.

 

Job Specification & Requirements

The post holder will:

  • PRIMARILY, follow the research leader’s instructions with due diligence and competence.
  • Undergo a two hour training session to prepare them for the consultation process.
  • Prepare the interview rooms allocated to them with required materials and ensure the recording equipment is in working order.
  • Brief participants on the consultation aims and objectives and invite participants to engage in consultation.
  • Brief participants on confidentiality, privacy and anonymity and data protection measures that will be taken to ensure this.
  • Record demographic information and complete participant consent processes before the interview.
  • Conduct interviews following instructions of a semi-structured interview script and make notes.
  • Ensure that interviews are audio recorded and that the recordings are appropriately coded and stored securely along with demographic information.
  • Contribute to the overall activities of the research team as instructed by research leadership team.
  • Be responsible for ensuring regular back up and storage of data.
  • Respect confidentiality of participant data and to ensure no data is disclosed to unauthorised persons.
  • The post holder will actively follow MSU policies.
  • The post holder will maintain an awareness and observation of Fire and Health & Safety Regulations.

Qualifications

A completed good Honours degree in a Social Science subject, or in the final year.

Engaged in a postgraduate research degree in a Social Science subject which involve qualitative research.

Experience

Experience in conducting interviews in some capacity or experience in conducting qualitative research.

Experience in conducting qualitative interviews.

 

Skills

A natural conversational knack to engage students in conversation.

 

Scrupulous attention to detail in recording and coding information.

 

A flexible yet committed work ethic.

A capacity to stimulate discussions in a way that participants reach the ‘crux pf the matter’ without diverging from the essence.

Some expertise in collecting qualitative data to understand the need for meticulous coding and note taking.

Capacity to follow instructions to the letter, while keeping the bigger research objective in sight.

Knowledge

A basic knowledge in empirical research, qualitative research processes, ethics procedures and research terminology is essential.

 A knowledge of confounding issues and the role of various interview biases is desirable.

Understanding thematic/content analysis would enhance interviewer skills.
A knowledge of Heuristic interviews would be excellent.

Personal qualities

Flexible, problem solving approach. Willingness to work cross-functionally. Ability to be highly accurate with samples and recording. Ability to work as part of a team and independently; good time management and organisational skills.

Good interpersonal skills.
